"The world showed no compassion to me..." (Erik, the Phantom of the Opera)
Compassion is a word that is often spoken, but rarely acted upon. As I've immersed myself in the Phantom of the Opera world these past two years, I've learned why people relate to the story. The majority of us relate to his pain one way or the other, whether through our own solitude, loneliness, rejection, or the lack of compassion we have received in our lives.
Recently, as I watched on TV the plea for donations regarding Operation Smile, I couldn't help but think of Erik, the Phantom of the Opera. He, like these children, was born deformed, ridiculed, shunned, and shown no compassion throughout his lifetime. In the 19th century, birth defects were superstitiously looked upon as a curse from God, and in some third-world countries that is still the case today.
It is not a child's fault when they are born deformed. They are innocently birthed into a world in an imperfect state, but they still possess the soul and spirit of a human that deserves to be loved and accepted for who they are.
As my Phantom friends know, nothing could have been done for Erik in the 19th century to fix his birth defect. He was forced to live a life of solitude, rejection, and one without compassion hiding behind a mask. Today, however, in the 21st century we have the capacity and ability to save a child from such a horrible fate by donating to organizations such as Operation Smile.
I encourage you to look at the pictures, see the heartache, and hear Erik's cry for compassion. Many fans want to redeem and save the Phantom of the Opera, a person who no longer lives. Now you can actually do the same for a human that is alive and needs your compassion expressed in the same fashion.
I hope you will donate what you can to Operation Smile, and save a child by showing your compassion, and healing their deformity so they might live healthy and productive lives.
Sincerely,
The Phantom's Student aka Vicki
