
As our students get ready to head back to school, excited to buy new supplies and back-to-school clothes, it’s easy to forget the kids who are afraid to go to school for fear of being rejected. Children like Ming, a young boy in Cambodia, will stay at home, ashamed of their facial deformity.
Ming desperately wanted someone to play with, but he didn’t have a single friend. Whenever he went outside, the other children ran away.

400 Students Learn to Lead at ISLC
From August 4-8, 2009, Operation Smile hosted 400 students from around the world at Christopher Newport University for the 17th annual International Student Leadership Conference. High school and college students took part in a 4-day conference.

"Janett Yasmin Espinoza Gómez is a 17 year old girl from Arequipa who had an incomplete bilateral cleft lip. She had previously shown up for screening during the Lima mission at the end of June. Unfortunately she was not selected because she was sick with the flu. Yasmin was very upset. She wanted to have surgery because this is her last year of school, and she wanted to go to the prom looking ‘beautiful’..."

Operation Smile’s Inaugural Mission to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Operation Smile completed its first international mission to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 15 - 25. The team screened 136 patients and performed 110 procedures on 95 patients. All of the children during the mission left a life lasting impression on the team, especially Eimi and Stanley. Read more >>
Operation Smile, Comfort Team Dedicated to Helping Children
Operation Smile recently partnered with the United States Navy aboard the hospital ship USNS Comfort on an international mission to Nicaragua. An Operation Smile team of medical volunteers worked alongside Navy personnel to provide life-changing surgeries for 57 patients during three days of surgery.

Smile Ambassador Mark Burnett Gets Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
Mark Burnett, a top Hollywood television producer and Operation Smile Ambassador, was honored with the 2,387th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 8. Burnett is the producer for some of televisions biggest hits including "Survivor" and "The Apprentice." His shows air in more than 70 countries worldwide. Read more >>

N.Y. Student All Smiles on Her 16th
For her sweet 16, Shelbi Montanaro didn't want much - just the chance to make a global difference for the betterment of people's lives. In lieu of gifts, the New York teen asked her guests to bring donations for Operation Smile. This fall, Shelbi will have the opportunity to see how her donations are put to use when she serves on a mission to China as a student volunteer.

Colorado Chapter Holds Annual Gala and Fundraiser
Operation Smile’s Denver Chapter held their annual gala and fundraiser on June 4, 2009, at Cableland, the official residence of the Mayor of Denver. Over 150 Operation Smile supporters gathered to raise funds and awareness for Operation Smile. The event raised nearly $32,000 for Operation Smile, creating 133 new smiles for children worldwide.

Student Program’s Mission Training Workshop
Forty students from eight U.S. states, South Africa, Ireland and Paraguay participated in Operation Smile’s Mission Training Workshop held July 31- August 3 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. The workshop trains students to effectively teach oral rehydration therapy, burn care and prevention, proper nutrition and dental care to families and patients during international medical missions. The students trained will participate on medical missions held during the next year.
